I can tell you that it's not terribly challenging on Normal difficulty, but Hard and Expert are a different story. However, there are some references aimed at people who've played through the entirety of the first game plus Brood War, so if you don't know the story, several characters and their past relationships can be confusing. I think Wings of Liberty has a very interesting campaign story, especially if you're coming in as a fan of the original game.
To start, I haven't finished Wings of Liberty's campaign, and while I'm fairly experienced at RTS, I'm not what you'd call a "good player," knowing nothing about macros or micromanagement or anything beyond a casual understanding of game mechanics. Achievements and campaign progress are saved in case the player upgrades to the full version of Wings of Liberty. It gives access to the first three missions of Wings of Liberty plus either The Evacuation or Smash and Grab (player's choice), the first two challenges: Tactical Command and Covert Ops, access to terrans in Single-Player vs AI and Custom Games in the following maps: Discord IV, High Orbit, The Shattered Temple, Xel'Naga Caverns and the custom map StarJeweled. StarCraft II: Starter Edition is a demo version of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.
